We constantly hear about the frightening consequences of climate change, global warming, air pollution, water pollution, overfishing, ozone layer depletion, overpopulation, habitat loss, land degradation, and ocean acidification. At the same time, we are reminded of how we, as individuals, can make a difference in saving our planet, our loved ones, and future generations.
From a young age, we have been taught simple ways to contribute, such as using paper bags, carpooling, and saving electricity. While these small efforts matter, some individuals and organizations take bigger, innovative steps to implement sustainable development on a grander scale.
What is Sustainable Development?
Does the term “Sustainable Development” ring a bell? In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly devised the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs consist of 17 interlinked global goals, designed as a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future.
While we all play a role in this movement, it is equally important to recognize and celebrate those who go beyond their limits to turn sustainability from a mere concept into a reality.
Devang Jani – Fighting for the Godavari River
Meet Devang Jani, a resident of Nashik, Maharashtra, who took his fight for environmental justice to the Bombay High Court. He demanded the removal of tonnes of concrete dumped on the Godavari riverbed. According to him, “Earlier, Godavari was self-reliant and used to flow year-round. But due to concretization, its natural springs were buried, making the river dependent on the Godavari Dam.”
After fighting for 19 years, his efforts bore fruit when, in 2018, the local governing body removed 200 tonnes of concrete from two ponds alone.

Anshu Pragyan Das – Creating India’s First Eco-Forest
Sustainable development isn’t just about combating pollution; it’s also about rejuvenating the environment. Meet Anshu Pragyan Das, the Divisional Forest Officer of Mahanadi Wildlife Division. She has given India its first eco-forest and maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward single-use plastic.
She transformed Muduligadia, a tiny hamlet in Nayagarh district, Odisha, by developing 45 eco-tourism centres. This initiative, started in 2018, aims to help locals earn a livelihood while enhancing forest conservation efforts. Muduligadia is now completely self-sustainable and eco-friendly.
Her efforts include:
- Tiger habitat conservation
- Improving water connectivity
- Constructing toilets to make the village open defecation-free
- Encouraging all 35 households to switch to LPG instead of firewood, reducing air pollution
Phool.co – Turning Floral Waste into Sustainability
Have you ever wondered what happens to the flowers offered to deities in temples? This floral waste contributes to 16% of water pollution. Enter Phool.co, a Kanpur-based startup that tackles this challenge head-on by recycling tonnes of flower waste across Uttar Pradesh.
Their innovative solutions include:
- Handmade incense sticks from floral waste
- Vermicompost, gift boxes, and eco-friendly packaging material
- A revolutionary product called “Fleather” – leather made from recycled flowers
Small Steps, Big Impact
We have shared just a few inspiring stories, but there are thousands of unsung heroes working tirelessly for sustainability. While survival is essential, sustainability is equally crucial. Without the right balance, humanity’s future remains uncertain.
You don’t need to be an environmentalist, an activist, or an expert to bring change. Every small effort counts. You can:
- Avoid plastic and switch to eco-friendly alternatives
- Utilize renewable energy like solar power
- Compost wet waste at home
- Spread awareness and educate others
It is everyone’s responsibility to protect Mother Earth. Let’s take action today!
